To make a garment, pieces of fabric must be joined together. Traditionally, this is done with a sewing machine. The problem? Every needle puncture creates a tiny hole in the fabric. When you are standing in a downpour, water will inevitably find its way through these thousands of tiny holes.

What is Heat Sealing?

To solve this, high-quality rainwear uses a process called heat sealing or seam taping. After the garment is stitched, a specialized machine applies a strip of waterproof tape over the seams using high heat and pressure.
